Kelsey is passionate about experiential, place-based and outdoor education, as well as ways to extend the learning environment beyond the traditional classroom setting.
In addition to teaching small, medium and large size undergraduate courses, Kelsey has taught upper-year undergraduate and graduate-level seminar courses, as well as developing and teaching an online place-based outdoor and experiential course, and undertaken course-specific and degree-level curriculum development work.
As an interdisciplinary scholar, with an extensive professional practice background, Kelsey is passionate about integrating interdisciplinary content into her courses, as well as practical, applied and industry-based learning opportunities, including service learning projects, problem-based learning, and professional practice reflections.
Kelsey's Teaching Journey
Kelsey began her career in the recreation industry teaching swimming lessons, advanced lifesaving courses, and Aquafitness classes, and coaching regional water polo and swim teams, as well as individual triathletes.
Since beginning her university teaching career, Kelsey has advanced from Marking Assistant to Graduate Teaching Assistant, and Guest Lecturer to Invited Speaker; she was appointed as a Sessional Lecturer, from 2011 - 2013, at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Canada) with cross appointments in the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, the Geography Department and the Department of Anthropology.
In 2013, she returned to university to pursue her doctoral studies in the Department of Tourism, in the School of Business, at the University of Otago (Dunedin, New Zealand). While studying at Otago, Kelsey was appointed as a Tutor and guest lectured in the Department of Tourism. She also spent a semester tutoring in the Department of Anthropology & Archaeology, and was a personal tutor with Disability Support Services.
In 2016, Kelsey accepted a 3-year Limited Term Appointment in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada). While at the University of Manitoba, she sole-taught and developed taught numerous undergraduate courses, both in-person and online, gaining valuable experience with course and curriculum design and learning management software while completing the Teaching and Learning Certificate Program through the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
For the 2019 - 2020 academic year, Kelsey was a Contract Lecturer in the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Canada).
On July 1st, 2020, Kelsey commenced a 2-year Definite Term Lecturer appointment in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, at the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Canada). During this time, she continued to lecture at Lakehead University, as a visiting academic, teaching Anthropology of Tourism in Winter 2021 and Risk Management in Outdoor Recreation in Winter 2022, through the Department of Anthropology and School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, respectively.
